Irish Negroni

The Negroni cocktail is a classic and beloved drink that originated in Italy. It was first concocted in the early 20th century by Count Camillo Negroni, who desired a stronger variation of the Americano cocktail. The Negroni quickly gained popularity and remains a staple in bars around the world.

For our Negroni cocktail recipe or Irish Negroni as we call it here in County Kerry, one must combine equal parts of Muckross Wild Irish Gin, Campari, and Valentia Island Vermouth in a mixing glass filled with ice. The ingredients are then stirred, not shaken, to ensure a proper blend without diluting the flavours. Once mixed, the vibrant red cocktail is strained into an Old Fashioned glass filled with fresh ice. Finally, a twist of orange peel is expressed over the drink, releasing its citrus oils, and then garnished by placing the peel in the glass.

The Irish Negroni delivers a balanced and complex flavour profile. The gin provides a botanical foundation, the Campari adds a bitter and herbal kick, while the sweet vermouth imparts a rich and velvety sweetness. The combination of these three ingredients creates a harmonious and unforgettable taste experience.

When sipping a negroni, its bold aroma awakens the senses, while the interplay of sweet and bitter tantalizes the palate, leaving a delightful lingering finish. It is a cocktail that demands attention and rewards those who appreciate its unique character.

Whether enjoyed as an aperitif or a nightcap, the Negroni remains a veritable classic that continues to captivate cocktail enthusiasts. Its enduring popularity reflects its timeless appeal and ability to please even the most discerning palates.
